Rhizomes are dense, fibrous, subterranean woody roots. Pouring hot water over them for 5 minutes will extract almost nothing. You MUST gently simmer the sliced rhizomes in a covered pot on low heat for a full 15 to 20 minutes to break open plant cell walls and release the medicinal resins!
