Cultivated in Anatolia and the Fertile Crescent since the dawn of the Bronze Age, Sesame (Sesamum indicum, Pedaliaceae; Turkish: Susam) was described in Babylonian and Assyrian cuneiform tablets as the divine oil that never spoils.
