The Sacred Shivering Bark of the Quechua

Growing in the cloud forests of the high Andes in Peru, Ecuador, and Bolivia, the bark of the Cinchona Tree (Cinchona officinalis), known locally as Quina-Quina ("Bark of Barks"), was used by indigenous Quechua populations to arrest shivering fevers. In the 1630s, Jesuit missionaries transported the miraculous "Jesuit\'s Powder" to Rome, where malaria plagued Europe\'s marshlands.


1. The Isolation of Pure Quinine Alkaloid (1820)

In 1820, French pharmacists Pierre-Joseph Pelletier and Joseph Caventou successfully isolated the pure bitter quinoline alkaloid Quinine from cinchona bark, enabling precise standardized dosages for the first time.


2. Mechanism Against Plasmodium Parasites

Quinine interferes with the digestion of hemoglobin by the intraerythrocytic Plasmodium falciparum malaria parasite, preventing the detoxification of toxic heme into inert hemozoin and causing parasite autolysis.
