The Intertidal Kelp That Founded Modern Iodine Science

Growing along the cold, rocky Atlantic and Pacific intertidal shores, Bladderwrack (Fucus vesiculosus) is a ribbon-like olive-brown seaweed equipped with paired air bladders that float the fronds toward sunlight during high tide. In 1811, French chemist Bernard Courtois first discovered the element Iodine by burning dried Bladderwrack ash.
